Image Hosting

What the hell is an image host?

An image host is a website that you can use to upload pictures. They provide you with a URL to your image.

Why do I need an image host?

An image host is necessary to post pictures on some sites, including blogs, message boards, and auctions. In order to post a picture that other people can see, you need an actual URL (web address) for the picture. This is not as simple as typing in the address of the site where you saw the picture. That is referred as "hot linking" and believe me when I say people do not appreciate when you hot link from their sites! It uses up their bandwith, and as soon as they realize you are linking from them, they kick your ass out of there, anyway! There are plenty of free image hosts out there, so hot linking is unnecessary at any rate.

How do I get an image host?

As I said before, there are several free (and more not-so-free) image hosting sites out there. Here are a few...

Village Photos  1ASPHost  Fotopic  Photobucket

How do I use my image host?

Every image hosting site is a little bit different, but the concept is the same. You upload pictures from your computer and save it in your image host file. Then you use the URL they provide to link to your photo. It sounds easy, and it is once you are familiar with it. Hopefully this will make it easy even for those who aren't familiar with it!

First of all, you must know how to save a picture from the web into your computer. This couldn't be simpler, even if you've never used a computer before.

Click here to find out how.

Once you have your pictures saved in your computer, you are only a few steps away from having an address you can use for them. You have to find an image host you like. You can try one of the links I provided above or you can do a search for "image host" on your favorite search engine and see what pops up.

I use Villagephotos for most of my pictures. They are the easiest to use, but only give you a limited amount of space. If you have alot of pictures or large file sizes, 1ASPHost might be better for you.

I'll walk you through uploading a picture through VillagePhotos.
